Exciting Collaboration for Child Protection in Emergencies
SOS Children's Villages in Kenya is proud to announce our active collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, specifically the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) and the Department of Social Development (DSD). Our shared commitment is to promote quality programs for children without parental care or at risk of losing it.
As esteemed members of the Child Protection in Emergencies Technical Working Group (CPiE TWG), coordinated by the DCS Strategic Interventions section at the national level, we are delighted to be part of this vital initiative. Through this partnership, we have provided both financial and technical support to drive strategic actions within the TWG.
Our collective efforts, in collaboration with other partners, have already yielded significant results. Working closely with the CPiE TWG, we have made valuable contributions to the development of the draft Child Protection in Emergencies Operational Guidelines. These guidelines serve as a comprehensive resource for stakeholders involved in child protection during and after emergencies. They cover crucial aspects such as disaster preparedness, response planning, child protection assessment, coordination of services, and monitoring and evaluation.
Furthermore, our COVID-19 Child Protection task force, operating under the CPiE TWG, has played a crucial role in developing guidelines and information materials for handling COVID-19 cases involving vulnerable children. These resources, including child- friendly messages, safeguarding information packs, and response matrices, have been widely shared with stakeholders.
SOS Children’s Villages in Kenya remains dedicated to providing ongoing technical and financial support to ensure the successful implementation and dissemination of these guidelines to all 47 counties. In collaboration with the CPiE TWG, we conducted pre-testing and validation exercises for the operational guidelines in five counties between 2020 and 2021: Turkana, Tana River, Kilifi, Busia, and Wajir. This comprehensive approach ensured the effectiveness of the guidelines in various contexts.
On Thursday, June 22, 2023, we saw the official launch of the National Child Protection in Emergencies Guidelines.
We aim to reach key local stakeholders, including children officers, social development officers, and community leaders such as CPVs, LVCs, CHVs, Chiefs, Village Elders, and strategic CSOs. In line with this goal, we will kick off the implementation activities by training community leaders on Child Protection in Emergencies as part of the Meru-Isiolo Emergency Project in Meru, Isiolo, and Uasin Gishu in July 2023.
