WORD FROM THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR
It's clear that amid challenges, a lot of hope shines through in our communities. The last quarter saw the MA intervention pillars of the strategy for Quality, innovative alternative care of children in need, Family Strengthening and Emergency Response, Youth development and Empowerment implemented successfully.
Our partners enable us to reach and impact more children, young people, and protection. We had an amazing partnership between Bata Shoe Company (K) Limited and SOS Children’s Villages in Kenya through the YouthCan! Initiative. It’s not just about raising funds; it's about coming together as a community to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people.
The safety department organised a workshop for MA staff and the region facilitated by our global head of safety and security. We aimed to build our staff safety awareness capacity and empower them to have a security culture.
SOS Children's Villages in Kenya is committed to nurturing lives and spreading hope. The Meru iHub and the Drought Response Project are initiatives that show that SOS Children's Villages in Kenya are actively finding ways to help communities, whether it is through technology or providing essential relief during tough times.
And let's take a moment to celebrate the Family Strengthening Programme's 20th anniversary. Seeing how many lives have been changed for the better because of this programme is incredible. It's a real testament to the values of SOS Children's Villages in Kenya.
In addition, Karcher, Helium GSK, and Deloitte gave donations in-kind: Christmas celebrations at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Radisson Nairobi Upper Hill, Park Inn by Radisson and Garden City Mall. Seeing the smiles on the faces of our children as they enjoyed the festivities was extraordinary. Two Decades of Transformative Impact: Celebrating Family Strengthening @ 20 and Empowering Lives
In a heartwarming gathering at Nairobi Village in Buruburu, youths who have navigated the transformative journey of the Family Strengthening (FS) programme joyously marked its 20th anniversary.
Each story shared echoed the profound impact the programme had on their lives, shaping them into resilient contributors to their communities across the nation.
Eric Mugo, once an aspiring dancer seeking fame, found a new direction under the guidance of Josephine Rombo within the FS programme. Prompted to return to school, he embraced a hospitality course.
Eric reflected, "The programme taught me crucial skills that extend beyond my workplace interactions; it emphasized the importance of a side hustle in this challenging economy and instilled the wisdom of saving for the future."
Fausta Mwili, the Education and Youth Empowerment Manager imparted valuable advice to the youth, emphasizing the significance of saving for a rainy day.
"With as little as 100 shillings a day, you can amass 36,400 shillings in a year, a nest egg that can jumpstart your entrepreneurial journey," she encouraged.
Sandra Wanjiku, who once navigated life's challenges alone, found solace and support within the FS programme. Her high school fees arrears were cleared, paving the way for university education and internships arranged by the programme.
Sandra highlighted, "Determination coupled with a willingness to learn can open doors, and the Family Strengthening programme taught me that."
James Mwangi, armed with a bachelor’s degree in public relations, discovered the FS programme after employability training in 2018.
His dedication during a three-month internship at a multinational organization earned him an extended tenure, eventually securing a permanent position.
James attested, "The skills acquired from the FS programme were instrumental in my journey to permanent employment."
Ibrahim Otieno, now a senior assistant accountant, credited the FS programme for honing his negotiation skills in 2017.
These skills became invaluable in his workplace, where he interacts with diverse individuals and superiors.
Ibrahim affirmed, "The programme equips you with practical skills applicable to real-world scenarios, enhancing your professional capabilities."
The celebration of two decades of the FS programme unfolded at SOS Children's Villages in Kenya, at the Nairobi village where its mission to fortify vulnerable families and prevent family breakdown has flourished. Collaborating with the state and stakeholders, the programme strives to provide primary healthcare and quality education, empowering families to be self- reliant.
As the programme continues to fortify families, building their resources and enhancing their parenting and household management capacities, the stories of transformation shared by these youths underscore the profound impact of 20 years dedicated to strengthening the bonds that hold communities together
Karcher's Donation
In the heart of Nairobi, at the bustling offices of SOS Children's Villages, an unexpected delivery brought smiles to the faces of the dedicated staff. It was a generous donation from Karcher SE & Co. KG, the world-renowned leader in cleaning equipment.
As the boxes were unpacked, the staff marvelled at the state-of-the-art cleaning machines that lay within. There were cold water high-pressure cleaners, carpet cleaners, professional steam cleaners, and even domestic steam cleaners. The assortment of cleaning detergents and an air blower completed the impressive collection.
With each item carefully accounted for and listed, the staff couldn’t contain their excitement. These cutting-edge machines would revolutionize the way we maintained cleanliness and hygiene within the SOS Children’s Villages.
The donated equipment will be put to good use. The high-pressure cleaners will tackle stubborn stains, the carpet cleaners will refresh worn-out carpets, and the steam cleaners will sterilize surfaces. The scrubber drier will ensure spotless floors, while the wet and dry vacuum cleaners will be invaluable in keeping every corner pristine.
The villages will sparkle with cleanliness, and the children will thrive in their newly improved surroundings. Thanks to Kärcher's unwavering generosity, the SOS Children’s Villages have become not just homes but havens of cleanliness and comfort for those in need.
Gratitude filled the air as the staff and children alike expressed their heartfelt thanks to Karcher SE & Co. KG. Their donation has truly made a difference, leaving a lasting legacy of cleanliness and care in the hearts of all who benefited from it
Donation from Deloitte & Touche
We have been in partnership with Deloitte for over 10 years through the house adoption program. Deloitte supports SOS Family House 4 'Kirungii House' at SOS Children's Village Nairobi. In December 2023, Deloitte's team, led by the CEO Ms. Anne Muraya, visited their sponsored family and donated a TV and washing machine. Additionally, each child in the house received a gift of a school bag.
Our longstanding partnership with Deloitte spanning over 10 years has made a significant impact on the lives of the children under our care, particularly the 10 children in Kitungii House.
The donation of the TV and washing machine will greatly enhance the quality of life within the family house, providing entertainment and easing the burden of household chores. These contributions create a more comfortable and nurturing environment for the children, allowing them to thrive and grow in a supportive home setting.
Furthermore, the school bags gifted to each child hold symbolic value beyond their practical use. They serve as a tangible reminder of Deloitte's care and commitment to their well-being, instilling a sense of belonging and pride in their education journey.
We are truly grateful for Deloitte’s ongoing partnership and dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable children. Your continued support inspires hope and resilience within our entire community. Together, we are creating a brighter future for all
